| Poker gets lawmakers' attention | 21st September, 2005 |
Poker has without a doubt conquered the internet, casinos and many of the local pubs in countries throughout the world. The increasing popularity has led to a keen eye on the business. US lawmakers are now investigating the impact of Texas Hold'em.
The history of gambling may be very old, reaching hundreds of years back, if not thousands. The modern technology offers new ways of gambling and such aids as the car as well as an increase of casinos speeds up the impact.
An article over at Argus Leader discusses the possibilities of legislations in the United States that could have an impact on gambling in general. The article does not state in which way although it does bring facts to the subject:At issue is a game called Texas Hold 'Em. Texas Hold 'Em tournaments often are broadcast on television. While a proposed measure might deal with how much money can be won or lost in a game, it also could open up debate to the subject of gambling.
Joe Diaz, a Division of Criminal Investigation agent who deals with gambling issues, told a legislative oversight committee the game is increasingly popular, both as a fund-raiser and as a social event. No matter what the final say is, the vast majority of the US citizens play poker on a regular basis and will no doubt check, raise and hope for the government to fold. | | | - written by Betty Holden |
