| Sportingbet makes bid for Empire | 6th September, 2005 |
Empire Poker revealed on Friday that it had received a $1.5 billion takeover offer which today was confirmed to come from Sportingbet. The plans are far from set in stone though as evident by a statement they in their turn issued today:
These discussions are at a very preliminary stage, and there can be no certainty whatsoever that agreement will be reached and an offer will be forthcoming. Perhaps this offer will fall though but nevertheless there is a general opinion in the world of poker business that a number of major mergers will happen in the coming year or two as online poker and casino rooms receive an influx of money from going public and look to expand even more quickly.
There is also a possibility that Party Gaming, parent company of Party Poker which Empire Poker shares it player and table base with will might try to outbid Sportingbet to further cement its position. | | | - written by Betty Holden |
