| Sweden invites poker monopoly | 7th September, 2005 |
Today, it is illegal to play online poker as a Swedish resident. That may change as Svenska spel [Swedish Gambling Corporation] is looking to implement online poker to their service. The Swedish government resides a monopoly, basically not allowing foreign gambling organisations to work on Swedish soil.
A new initiative by the Swedish gambling service suggests that a 'controlled' poker service is important for the nation's well-being, that is, individual citizens who they claim will gamble and lose too large sums of money.
According to an article on Swedish website Aftonbladet, any 13-year-old can gamble on the 'uncontrolled online poker sites' and lose an infinite amount of money.
The article also goes on saying that the total online poker profit will be distributed to organisations like the Red Cross instead of shareholders' hands. True as it may be, the article misses out on the hundreds of millions of dollars that go straight to the wallets of the authorities.
